IHE that started in 1999 by HIMSS and RSNA is a specification of transactions between systems. Even if it describes only integration features and it is not a product itself, but IHE is very useful in purchasing products that integrate into workflow. The goal of IHE is to improve the efficiency and accuracy of clinical practice through seamless information flow, continuity and integrity of patient information, optimized clinical workflow and enabling communication among products of all vendors. IHE Technical Framework is easy-to-understand, coherent, functional sets and a convenient way for users and vendors to communicate precisely, and it describes integration requirements and required functionality in products. In the past IHE started at Radiology domain, but it is now evolving and expanding toward wider areas including IT Infrastructure, Cardiology and Laboratory. IHE has been proved through the real-world products and also it will be a core integration key for Electronic Health Record systems in the near future.
